4 nights / 4 days

The fourth night buys one thing, and it's the right thing: a whole day where you don't move the boat.

The Cayos Holandeses sit at the outer edge of Guna Yala, behind a reef that runs for miles and falls away into open Caribbean on the far side. Inside it is an anchorage cruisers have called the swimming pool for forty years — flat, turquoise, and often empty.

On three nights you visit it. On four you live in it for a day: morning drift snorkel on the wall, an afternoon on sand nobody walked on that week, and a night at anchor where the only lights are your own.

Day by day

Day 1 — Board and sail west

Aboard at 10:00, briefing, and underway. First anchorage in the inner cays.

Day 2 — East to the outer reef

The longest and best sail of the trip. Open water, real wind, sails up if conditions allow. Anchored behind the Holandeses reef by afternoon.

Day 3 — The reef day

No passage. Drift snorkel along the wall in the morning, an uninhabited beach after lunch, fishing with the crew in the late afternoon if the group wants it. This is the day people describe when they get home.

Day 4 — Working back

A slower sail west with a stop at whichever reef the morning call points at. Last anchorage.

Departure — 07:00

Back to Cartí for the transfer.

Who this is for

Snorkellers and divers. Anyone who read about the Dutch Cays and wants to actually be there, not pass through.
