Best Time to Visit San Blas: Dry Season vs Green Season

The short answer

San Blas has two distinct personalities, not a good season and a bad one. The Dry Season runs from mid-December to April and is the classic sailing season: steady wind, steady sun. The Green Season runs from May to mid-December and is the calm one: fewer boats and water like a mirror. Both are good trips. They are different trips.

• Dry Season — mid-December to April. The high season you read about, and perfect sailing weather. For travellers who want the feeling of sailing: billowing sails, endless sun, the postcard Caribbean. It is also the busiest stretch of the year.

• Green Season — May to mid-December. Do not call it the rainy season. This is when the water turns into a flat, turquoise mirror, and it is honestly our favourite. Fewer boats, more space, and a stillness that does not exist in February.

Which one is yours

What the season changes about the trip

The season changes how the route feels more than where it goes. The outer groups — Cayos Holandeses among them — are three to four hours of sailing from the mainland, so how much wind there is shapes how far out a given number of nights will take you. Does it rain a lot in San Blas?

We do not call May to mid-December the rainy season, and that is deliberate: the defining feature of those months is not rain but calm. The water flattens, the crowds thin out, and it is the season our own captains prefer.
