Sea & Jungle

Three nights sailing the outer cays, four days upriver.

Guna Yala is two places. Everybody sees one of them.

The archipelago — the cays, the reef, the water people photograph — is the half that reaches the internet. The other half is behind it: rivers, forest, and communities that have been there far longer than any boat.

Almost nobody sees both, because doing it legally requires a marine charter licence and a permit from the Guna General Congress, and no one else in Panama holds both.

Three nights under sail, then upriver. The same territory, from the two directions it can be entered.

Practical

How it runs

  • Three nights aboard in the outer cays of Guna Yala — private cabins, air conditioning, chef.

  • Four days upriver, two of them in a Guna community’s ceremonial house.

  • Round-trip overland transfer from Panama City, all boat and canoe transfers.

  • Private groups only. Dates are set with you.

Included on board

Reef snorkelling

Masks, fins and a crew that knows which reef is working today. Guna Yala’s reefs sit in shallow, warm, clear water — you don’t need a certification, a boat trip or a plan. You need to be in the water, which you will be, most of the day.

Traditional fishing

Hand lines, the crew’s own spots, and the same fishermen we’ve bought from for years pulling alongside at anchor. Whatever comes up goes straight to the galley and onto the table the same day. Guests who have never fished tend to be the ones who won’t put the line down.

Kayaking & paddleboarding

Two double kayaks and boards aboard, for the shallow water between the cays where the dinghy can’t go. Fifteen minutes of paddling from most anchorages puts you on sand nobody has walked on that week.

Sailing

This is a sailboat, and you’re welcome to sail it. Take the helm, trim a sheet, or learn to do both from a licensed captain who has spent years in these waters. Or don’t — nobody will ask you to.
