Crewed sailing in San Blas with private and shared charter options

Short answer: Nomad Sailors is a Panama-based charter company operating in San Blas (Guna Yala). Both private and shared sailing trips can put you close to the islands and make life aboard part of your holiday. The choice is whether you want the boat for your own group or prefer a social departure with other guests.

Start with the experience you want

A private charter reserves a boat for your group. A shared charter reserves accommodation on a departure where guests share communal areas and the planned itinerary. Neither format is automatically right for everyone.

Question

Private charter

Shared charter

What do you reserve?

A boat for your group

Accommodation on a shared departure

Who uses communal areas?

Your group and the crew

You, other guests and the crew

How is the itinerary agreed?

With the captain, within operational limits

According to the departure’s arrangements and conditions

How should you compare cost?

The complete quote for your group

The complete quote for your cabin or occupancy

What needs checking?

Boat suitability, capacity and inclusions

Cabin occupancy, departure, inclusions and any age rules

For couples and solo travellers

Couples may prefer a private trip for more time alone or choose a shared departure for its social setting. Solo travellers can ask about available cabins and single-use arrangements. Compare the actual quote: price depends on the boat, dates and occupancy.

For families and groups of friends

Start with the number of adults and children and how you would like to share cabins. Private trips may offer more scope to agree the daily pace with the captain. A family considering a shared departure needs confirmation that the trip and equipment suit the children’s ages. Groups should check the capacity of each proposed boat rather than assuming everyone can travel aboard one vessel.

What stays specific to the boat

Meals, drinks, bathrooms, air conditioning, internet and equipment should be checked in the proposal. Neither format guarantees a particular island every day or unrestricted route changes. Weather, permissions and practical conditions guide the captain’s decisions.

Availability and booking

Shared departures use specific dates and occupancy arrangements. Private-boat availability also changes as owners and calendars confirm bookings. Sending an enquiry is a request to check options; it does not reserve a boat or cabin.

Frequently asked questions

Is a shared charter only for backpackers?

No. Shared departures may suit solo travellers, couples and friends who enjoy meeting other guests. Compare the actual cabin, services, departure and total quote rather than relying on a label.

Does a private charter let us change every part of the route?

You can discuss preferences with the captain, but weather, local permissions, safety and practical conditions determine the final route and activities.

Which option is better for families?

It depends on the children’s ages, cabin needs, equipment and the particular departure. Private travel can offer more control over pace; shared family suitability must be confirmed for the specific trip.

Read the price unit before comparing

The private-charter tables on Nomad’s boat pages show the price per night for the whole boat at the stated guest count. For example, the Leopard 40 table for two guests, checked on 16 October 2026, lists USD 1,450 per night. Five nights produces a USD 7,250 charter subtotal, before separately charged transfers, Guna community entry charges and extras.

A shared departure has its own cabin or occupancy rate, dates and inclusions. Dividing a private boat’s price by its maximum capacity does not produce a published shared-cabin fare. Use the complete cost guide to compare actual proposals.

Is there a three-night minimum?

Nomad offers trips from one night and custom longer expeditions, subject to the specific boat or shared departure. Five nights is a recommendation, not a general minimum. Ask which departures fit your dates.

Are transfers and Guna entry charges included?

They are coordinated and charged separately. Confirm each item in the written quote for either charter format.

How is a boat or cabin confirmed?

An enquiry is followed by availability validation and a proposal. A booking is confirmed in writing only after payment is verified and the contract is signed, according to the official booking conditions.
